Sarah Gordon, a partner in Steptoe’s Washington office, focuses her practice on matters related to reinsurance, insurance, and employee benefits.

Ms. Gordon has significant experience representing reinsurance and insurance companies in complex litigation before federal and state courts and arbitration panels.  With respect to reinsurance, Ms. Gordon has extensive arbitration experience representing cedents and reinsurers in the life, health, and property/casualty industries.  Ms. Gordon’s work in the reinsurance area routinely involves the duty of utmost good faith, the interpretation of treaty language, claims management, premium disputes, and underwriting practices.  She also has extensive experience with underwriting and actuarial experts in the reinsurance industry.  On the insurance side, Ms. Gordon represents insurance companies involved in a wide range of coverage disputes, including latent health coverage claims, environmental coverage claims, and claims against directors and officers.

In addition, Ms. Gordon’s practice focuses on the employee benefits field, with particular emphasis on Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) litigation and administrative investigations.  She has litigated matters involving breach of fiduciary duty, failure to monitor, and other ERISA claims.  She has also provided advice with respect to captive insurers and pension plan obligations.  On the investigative side, Ms. Gordon has represented insurers, financial advisors, pension plan sponsors, and other companies before the Department of Labor.

Ms. Gordon serves as a Vice Chair of the Excess, Surplus Lines and Reinsurance Committee of the ABA’s Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section (TIPS), and she has previously served on the TIPS Special Standing Committee for Diversity in the Profession.  Ms. Gordon is also a member of the National LGBT Bar Association.  Ms. Gordon clerked in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and she is a graduate of American University Washington College of Law (2006) and the University of Florida (2003).
